As the descendant of four generations of Swedish master cabinetmakers, Bruno Mathsson was born to design furniture. Mathsson was known as a methodical perfectionist who made usefulness the fundamental attribute of his works, yet he was also a ceaseless experimenter, who constantly searched for improvements in form, materials and methods of making.
Mid-Century armchair with ottoman by Bruno Mathsson manufactured by DUX, Sweden in the 1970s. The armchair and ottoman are upholstered in the original buttoned leather. The frame, also original, is made from beechwood.
"Comfortable sitting is an 'art'- it ought not to be," wrote Swedish designer Bruno Mathsson. "Instead, the making of chairs has to be done with such an 'art' that the sitting will not be any 'art.'" It's not surprising that the pernilla chair has been a Classic since its design in 1944, this version being his 1969 revision. Covered in original black leather and linen.
